The age we live in is marked by wars, conflicts and crises, as well as economic, social and existential uncertainties. A Monk living in the Middle Ages had a vision of all this, a good eight centuries before our time. In the mountains of Sila (southern Italy), the Monk transformed his visions into images (figurae) and symbols to form the Liber Figurarum, or “Book of Figures.” After more than 800 years this ancient medieval illuminated codex is still with us and is now preserved in England, at Oxford.

However, one side of the cracked wall sticks out several inches farther than the other side. Mr. Terrific notices that Superman is kind of bothered and asks him what’s wrong. Superman points out that the wall is a little off. Annoyed, Mr. Terrific says “What do you want me to do? Do you want me to take it apart and put it back together?!” Superman says “No, it’s just…” An annoyed Mr. Terrific walks off, and Superman apologizes, saying he didn’t mean to bum him out and he shouldn’t have brought it up. Then Superman turns and says to himself, “Darn it, I can be such a jerk sometimes.”
