Animal lover Mabel (voice of Piper Curda) seizes an opportunity to use a new technology to ‘hop’ her consciousness into a life-like robotic beaver and communicate directly with animals. “Inside Out 2” returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone.

Riley’s back at home with her parents after hockey camp. Her mom asks how it went. Riley’s emotions discuss how to answer when Ennui takes control and answers in a nonchalant fashion: “It was good.” We then zoom into Mom’s emotions and see her Anger gets frustrated and exclaims “She goes away for three days and all we get is ‘good?!’” Then mom’s Anxiety asks about the red streak in her hair and worries that she joined a gang. Then we zoom into Dad’s emotions and see his Anxiety asks “She goes away for three days and all we get is ‘Good?!’” The other emotions pause for a second and say yeah, that’s about right. Then they go back to watching a game.

Joy goes back to the secret vault and lets Deep Dark Secret out. She convinces it to reveal the secret and it says she burned a hole in the rug. Joy is surprised because she thought it was the time she peed in the pool. Deep Dark Secret gets scared and retreats back into the vault and closes the door.

Terrier Max (Patton Oswalt) is coping with some major life changes. His owner (Ellie Kemper) is now married and has a toddler, Liam. Max is so worried about protecting the boy that he develops a nervous tic. On a family trip to a farm, Max and mutt Duke (Eric Stonestreet) encounter canine-intolerant cows, hostile foxes and a terrifying turkey, all of which only elevates Max’s anxiety. Luckily, Max gets some guidance from veteran farm dog Rooster (Harrison Ford, making his animated-film debut), who pushes Max to ditch his neuroses, find his inner alpha, and give Liam a little more freedom.

Meanwhile, while her owner is away, plucky Pomeranian Gidget (Jenny Slate) tries to rescue Max’s favorite toy from a cat-packed apartment with a little help from her feline friend, Chloe (Lake Bell), who has discovered the joys of catnip.

And crazy-but-cute bunny Snowball (Kevin Hart) gets delusions of grandeur that he’s an actual superhero after his owner Molly starts dressing him in superhero pajamas. But when Daisy (Tiffany Haddish), a fearless Shih Tzu, shows up to ask for Snowball’s help on a dangerous mission, he’ll have to summon the courage to become the hero he’s only been pretending to be.
