during the credits
  • We see Shuri at the beach in a continuation of the final scene in the film. She is approached by Nakia and a young boy. Nakia introduces him as her son, Toussaint. Nakia explains that T’Challa moved them to Haiti to distance them from the pressure of the Wakandan throne. After he came back (Avengers: Endgame), he found out about his illness so he had them stay there so they won’t witness his suffering. Shuri asks her if Queen Ramonda met the child and she says that she did. The boy asks if she can keep a secret and tells her that “Toussaint” is only his Haitian name and that he has a Wakandan one as well, it is “Prince T’Challa, son of King T’Challa,”.
  • We see the words: “Black Panther will return.”

Buster (Matthew McConaughey) has turned the New Moon Theater into a local hit, but Buster has his eyes on a bigger prize: Debuting a new show at the Crystal Tower Theater in glamorous Redshore City.

But with no connections, Buster and his cast—including harried mother Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), rocker Ash (Scarlett Johansson), earnest Johnny (Taron Egerton), shy Meena (Tori Kelly) and, of course, provocateur Gunter (Nick Kroll)—have to sneak their way into the world-famous Crystal Entertainment offices, run by ruthless mogul Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale).

In a desperate attempt to get Mr. Crystal’s attention, Gunter spontaneously pitches an outrageous idea that Buster quickly runs with, promising that their new show will star rock legend Clay Calloway (Bono). Problem is, Buster has never met Clay, an artist who shut himself away from the world more than a decade ago after the loss of his wife. Even worse, Buster has failed to realize that Mr. Crystal is an egocentric gangster who would rather drop somebody off the roof of a building than be lied to.

As Gunter helps Buster dream up an out-of-this-world theatrical masterpiece, and the pressure (and sinister threats) from Mr. Crystal mount, Rosita’s leading role in the show gets ripped away and handed to Mr. Crystal’s spoiled daughter, Porsha, played by Grammy-nominated artist Halsey. Desperate to save the show, and his life, Buster embarks on a quest to find Clay and persuade him to return to the stage.

What begins as a dream of big-time success becomes an emotional reminder of the power of music to heal even the most broken heart.

Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.

during the credits
King T’Challa attends a UN meeting in Vienna, accompanied by Wakandans including Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Okoye (Danai Gurira). At this meeting he publicly announces that his nation of Wakanda will offer aid to anyone in need, and a UN member then asks him how a “nation of farmers” could help the rest of the world. T’Challa’s smile at this question (possibly implying that he will finally reveal to the rest of the world that Wakanda isn’t actually a third-world country, but that it has vastly superior technology to any other country because of its supply of the super-metal ‘Vibranium’.)

Urban Hymn Review

Urban Hymn – What starts as a gritty look at the life of two street kids in London turns into a movie-of-the-week with a violent twist.

As the movie begins, we follow best friends Jamie and Leanne (Letitia Wright and Isabella Laughland) as they loot several stores during the London riots in August of 2011. They’re both street-wise kids who know how to flip stolen merchandise into cash. They both live in a group home managed by social workers, but the place has the feel of an institution where the inmates run the asylum. Into this home comes Kate (Shirley Henderson), a new social worker. Jamie is assigned to her and we quickly learn how little respect Jamie and Leanne have for authority. The two friends only care for each other it’s clear that as long as they’re together, they’ll be in a destructive downward spiral.

All that changes when Leanne misses a meeting with her parole officer and gets sent back to jail. Without Leanne’s interference, Jamie and Kate start to talk and Jamie soon takes an interest in Kate’s choir. Jamie turns out to be a talented singer, and she joins the choir. Singing gives her life a purpose, and Jamie starts turning her life around. But just as things start looking up, Jamie is arrested for her activities during the riots and is sentenced to a six month term in jail. What follows is a back-and-forth struggle for Jamie as she tries to move forward with her life through music, but at the same time tries to be loyal to Leanne who’s always protected her. Leanne’s desperate to keep hold of Jamie and sees Kate as someone who’s trying to separate them. A final confrontation is looming, and it will be rough for Jamie, Leanne, and Kate.

This flick gets off to a strong start but starts to coast about midway through when Jamie joins the choir. At that point it turns into a generic rebellious teenager redemption story and coasts until the surprise twist at the very end of the movie. Both Wright and Laughland give strong performances and they’re very convincing as troubled teens, one looking at a promising future while the other is resigned to a life of crime and prison. The only thing that really bugged me was Jamie’s performance that ends the movie. She plays a guitar and sings at a student concert. It’s a nice piece with a small band and a chorus backing her, but for the entire duration of the song she plays the same chord on the guitar. Her fingers never move on the fretboard. Yeah, I know it’s a tiny point but it annoys me when music scenes look so fake on the big screen. Jamie does have a very nice voice, so that makes up for the guitar shortcoming. Give it a watch and stick with it to the end.
