“Inside Out 2” returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone.

Riley’s back at home with her parents after hockey camp. Her mom asks how it went. Riley’s emotions discuss how to answer when Ennui takes control and answers in a nonchalant fashion: “It was good.” We then zoom into Mom’s emotions and see her Anger gets frustrated and exclaims “She goes away for three days and all we get is ‘good?!’” Then mom’s Anxiety asks about the red streak in her hair and worries that she joined a gang. Then we zoom into Dad’s emotions and see his Anxiety asks “She goes away for three days and all we get is ‘Good?!’” The other emotions pause for a second and say yeah, that’s about right. Then they go back to watching a game.

Joy goes back to the secret vault and lets Deep Dark Secret out. She convinces it to reveal the secret and it says she burned a hole in the rug. Joy is surprised because she thought it was the time she peed in the pool. Deep Dark Secret gets scared and retreats back into the vault and closes the door.

While on a forgettable first date together in Ohio, a black man (Daniel Kaluuya) and a black woman (Jodie Turner-Smith), are pulled over for a minor traffic infraction. The situation escalates, with sudden and tragic results, when the man kills the police officer in self-defense. Terrified and in fear for their lives, the man, a retail employee, and the woman, a criminal defense lawyer, are forced to go on the run. But the incident is captured on video and goes viral, and the couple unwittingly become a symbol of trauma, terror, grief and pain for people across the country.

As they drive, these two unlikely fugitives will discover themselves and each other in the most dire and desperate of circumstances and will forge a deep and powerful love that will reveal their shared humanity and shape the rest of their lives.
